TLA’s (three letter acronyms) – there are a lot of them about ! VR (virtual reality) AR (Augmented reality) HMD (head mounted display) – everyone has their own assumptions as to what they mean and sometimes they are just plain misleading.
Most assume VR to imply using an immersive head mounted display like Oculus Rift or Google Cardbaord, but actually, the definition in Wikipedia is: Virtual reality (VR), also known as immersive multimedia or computer-simulated reality, is a computer technology that replicates an environment, real or imagined, and simulates a user’s physical presence and environment to allow for user interaction.
So, actually, no heads up display is needed. You could just be exploring a 3D world or scene in a window on your PC or a webpage on the browser as most of the current computer games do. This in many cases can be preferable to head mounted VR for people who wear glasses like myself.
So, what do you call that ? We refer to it as i3D or interactive 3D and this can be a byproduct of a VR or AR application development or an specified deliverable in itself. Once we have created or imported 3D content, rendered it, shaded it and defined how a user can interact with an environment (opening doors, walking through walls ?), then we have the choice to publish to AR, VR or i3D – just like creating a word document and the printing to PDF or printer. A little more involved, but you get the idea.
What kind of bespoke app content can we include ?
Depending upon the use case and audience, we are able to include:
> Custom icons, hazards, links to websites
> PDF texts, manuals to scroll and read content
> How to animated 3D videos
> Embed video content to play on the wall
> Sound to play in proximity to a position or object
> High resolution PDFs to appear as posters on walls or billboards
> Images and logos
> People walking in a scene
> Zombies, killer spiders roaming around & high calibre weapons
